Gravesend History

Gravesend is a maritime town that nestles on the south bank of the River Thames only a few miles from the heart of London. You'll be amazed at all there is to do and see in this compact centre with its surprising combination of fascinating history and modern comfort. At the heart of the town and providing a focus for an attractive shopping centre, is St George's church, last resting place of Pocahontas, the American indian princess. Her statue in the church grounds is a place of modern pilgrimage. The River Thames provides an ever changing backdrop to the town. Not only is it a commercial artery serving the capital city, it also offers something new and interesting to visitors of all ages and enthusiams.
Another fact is Charles George Gordon who arrived in Gravesend in 1865 as the youngest ever Colonel in the British Army and already hailed as 'Chinese Gordon' for his exploits. He was commandant of the Thames Forts but increasingly became involved with the community creating a school, helping the needy and giving pensions. Gordon of Khartoum was also 'Gordon of Gravesend'.
